Biography

Dr Sharon Walsh is a Lecturer Above the Bar (Assistant Professor) in Economics at the University of Galway. As a health and social care economist, her research is focused on ageing-related policies and interventions.

Prior to joining the Discipline of Economics as a permanent member of staff, Sharon was employed as a fixed-term lecturer. She also held postdoctoral research positions at the Centre for Economic and Social Research on Dementia (CESRD) and the Heath Economic and Policy Analysis Centre (HEPAC) at University of Galway. She completed a PhD in Economics at University of Galway in 2017. Prior to her PhD studies, she worked in the Economic and Social Research Institute, University of Limerick and University College Cork.

Sharon's research interests lie in health and social care economics, with a particular focus on the economics of ageing. Her research is informed by the view that the role of an academic is to produce high quality evidence that has the potential to positively impact society and the well-being of its citizens. As an applied economist, she seeks to employ the methodological techniques of economics to examine key economic issues of finance, provision, and access in the context of health and ageing.
